I am a firm believer in the power of words and empowering others to use their voice in a manner such that they too can empower, educate, and inspire others. I do not believe that words should ever be used to destroy another person. Everyone has something to say and learning how to get their point across tactfully and effectively is one of the tasks I plan to accomplish this year. Additionally, I hope to create a community that learns to listen to what others have to say as well. Listening doesn't equate to accepting or agreeing.
I plan to accomplish this task through the use of many stories and texts that we will read this year. Students will be introduced to a variety of voices as they develop or, in some cases, refine their own. Together, we will read, analyze, examine, deconstruct, and simply enjoy many stories, opinions, and perspectives.
Respect in my classroom is of the highest of priorities. I pride myself in being able to create a space that is, first of all, safe and inviting. Not just for me, but for all who enter my space. This is a non-negotiable and disrespect will never be tolerated. Period.
I ask my students to become active participants in their own learning and I completely, 100% expect them to assume the responsibility that follows.
Anyone who has ever taken my class can attest to the fact that I am a strong believer in following directions and reading everything. There will be, sprinkled throughout the year, little rewards, opportunities, and chances to earn extra credit, simply by reading and following directions. I will never point it out or show you where to find them. They will be hidden in plain sight for those who do not follow directions or read everything, but easy to spot for those who do.
