ALL CLASSES...HEAR YE! HEAR YE!

I am definitely one who believes in making adjustments when something just isn't moving smoothly. According to a few of my scholars, my website "is too far away..." and Google Classroom is "much closer..."

None of that makes any sense, BUT, I am posting this to make you all aware that I will just be posting all homework and announcements in the Google Classroom. This (1) reduces the amount of places that I have to update and (2) keeps all the information in one location.

Day 21 AP: Act I of The Crucible

We started reading Act I of The Crucible. We did not complete the full Act and therefore, homework (which was already posted in the Google Classroom last week) was to finish reading Act I.

Start working on the handouts, but they were not homework.

Day 20: AP LANG 10/22-10/23 (Drama, Allegory, History, & Reading Homework)

Today, I handed out another insert for the IENs page 14 (Drama Terms Foldable 1- orange sheet). This is supposed to go in the IEN and you need to update it with notes by next week. The notes are attached here.

Next, we copied down the definition for allegory and watched a short allegorical clip from "Lion, Witch and Wardrobe." Then explained the allegory in the clip. This was page 15.

Then I covered basic historical information that led up to the inspiration behind The Crucible.  This information was recorded on page 16 of the IENs.

Finally, we began reading ACT I.  There were notes handed out that need to be addressed either as we read or after we read. It is whatever works best for you.

The homework for tonight:

1) READ: "Why I Wrote the Crucible" & take notes in your IEN (page 17) . (Be prepared to discuss during the next class) Article in the Google Classroom.

2) READ: "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" In your IENs (page 18) Sermon in the Google Classroom.
As you read, make note of:
1. all the images that come to mind (imagery)
2. all the feelings that this sermon evokes or attempts to evoke
3. the tone and how the imagery contributes to the tone
4. the parts of this sermon where you think those in his audience may have fainted and cried and why you picked those parts (yes, it has been stated that listeners in his original audience actually fainted and cried during parts of the sermon)
5. Edward's overall message to sinners and what he wishes to teach them

Be prepared to discuss during the next class.

THE IEN TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE IS IN THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM FOR YOUR REFERENCE.

As we enter the end of quarter one, a final extra credit opportunity awaits you.  You need to find out who Joseph Welch was and what his role was in ending the "Red Scare". You must type your answer in this form by 5PM on the 24th.

Day 18-19 (10/16-10/21) AP LANG: Crucible Intro, Grammar Check, IENs, Essay Resubmissions

  1. On 10/16-10/17, that was the first official timed writing. This was not and will not be graded. Students will do a few more and get to choose which one they want me to grade.
  2. There was also a pop quiz on the Fallacy Notes which were for homework the previous class.
  3. On 10/18-10/21 there was a "Grammar Check" assignment. There was a "busy picture" posted on the board and students had to create a loaded sentence following this format: Article adjective noun, appositive, verb adverb prepositional phrase conjunction rest of sentence. (This activity does not need to be made up for those who were absent.)
  4. There was a handout given out. It is titled "Modes of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos". Students need to cut it out and paste it into their Interactive English Notebooks (IENs) on the next page (the one after "The Thesis").  Students who were absent will need to go to their assigned folder located in the classroom on the materials table and get theirs.
  5. Students will have the opportunity to resubmit their essays. The procedure to do so is below as well as posted in the Google Classroom.
  6. There was a reading assigned two class periods ago: The Introduction of the Crucible. Those who didn't have the black book were supposed to read the pdf that was uploaded in Google Classroom. Based on that reading, there were 4 questions that students were tasked to answer in their IENs. Those questions are below. Students who were absent will need to make this up:
Introduction to The Crucible Questions:
  1. Explain in detail what the driving force was behind Miller’s imagination?
  2. Explain the parallel between Miller’s work and the state of the country at the time.
  3. Explain how this work stems from personal accounts of Miller.
  4. Explain why the bodies of those convicted were not given respectful/proper burials and what the reasoning was behind this act.
Resubmission Process for ICB Essay

I stated in class that there would be no resubmissions. However, on major assignments, I did state at the beginning of the year that resubmissions would be offered and you would have 1 week from the time the essays were returned. I must honor that and with that being said, all (A and B day) who wish to resubmit must do so by 9AM on Monday, October 28 following the rules below:

In order to resubmit, you MUST:
1. Submit your new/revised essay by 9:00 AM EST on Monday, October 28 in the Google Classroom under the "ICB ESSAY RESUBMISSIONS DUE BY 10/28 9AM" tab.

THEN...

2. Print your original paper.
3. Print your new paper.
4. Provide a written/typed explanation as to what you changed/removed/added to your new paper.
5. Print the rubric (attached to the Google Classroom announcement and assignment tab).
6. Staple the entire packet.
7. Physically turn in this packet by 4:15 PM on Monday, October 28 in my classroom.

PLEASE NOTE: I WILL NOT ACCEPT THE EXCUSE OF "I THOUGHT I HAD UNTIL 4:15 TO SUBMIT" AS IT CLEARLY STATES ABOVE THAT YOU NEED TO SUBMIT IN THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM BY 9:00 AM AND THEN HAND ME A HARD COPY PACKET BY 4:15 PM ON THAT SAME DAY.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE ABOVE RESUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS BY THE DEADLINE, YOUR RESUBMISSION WILL BE NULL AND VOID AND YOUR ORIGINAL GRADE WILL REMAIN.

*You can earn up to half of your missed points.

The composition notebooks are ideal for this type of set up. In the notebooks, we discussed the ins and outs of the AP exam, timed writing tips, and logical fallacies. The slides to the notes can be found here

You should really try to get a composition notebook as was stated on the syllabus if you do not have one.

      • Anyone who has missed any lessons above in StudySync, will need to complete them by next week (10/11)

Students can bring me $8.00 by Friday, October 4, to purchase a book from me.  This way, you don’t have to worry about trying to order one in time.

I have received some donated books already. Therefore, if you are unable to purchase a copy, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can secure one for your child. If you are able to purchase an extra copy, I welcome as many as you are able to donate. Students will be reading in class, but they will also be expected to read and annotate at home and I want to make sure all students can participate outside of class.

Day 13 (10/1-10/2) AP Lang (Essays and Crucible)

    AP

    A few reminders...

    For the final ICB Exam:
    1. bring your book (YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BOOK...everyone!)
    2. bring your articles (if you never printed them, you should...you will not be able to use the Chromebook or your phone, or anyone else's articles).
    3. Bring whatever notes you have, especially the rhetorical triangle notes.

This is a paper exam and will probably take the entire class period.

For the essay due this evening:
    1. Double-space your entire essay.
    2. Works cited page goes on a page by itself.
    3. Do a spell check.
    4. Check your word count by highlighting the actual paragraphs and checking the word count that way. Your heading and title do not count.
    5. Review the rubric.

Consider this: This is your first essay with me.  For many of you, this is your first essay that you have to actually use textual evidence, properly, and some of you are stressing out. Relax. You can only do your best and then, learn from mistakes, and grow from there. No one has "arrived" when it comes to anything. There is and will always be room for growth. DO NOT ALLOW THIS ESSAY TO CAUSE YOU ANY MORE STRESS THAN NECESSARY. IT WON'T DO ANYTHING BUT MAKE YOU SICK. When you have completed your essay, TURN IT IN, log off, and go do something that you enjoy. This is only day 13...we have a whole 70-ish more to go. YOU WILL BE FINE!

    • Writing Lab: last day to work on essays, get peer reviews, have me check over your opening paragraphs and format.
      • ALL ESSAYS FOR BOTH A & B DAY ARE DUE IN THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM BY 11:59 PM ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO LATE ESSAYS WILL BE ACCEPTED. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO HIT "TURN IN" OR "SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT" ON THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM, YOU NEED TO LEARN BEFORE YOU LEAVE CLASS TODAY. BOTTOM LINE.
    • Unit One ICB Assessment on Thursday October 3 and Friday October 4.
      • If you are absent, you will need to make an appointment with me and make this assessment up PRIOR TO  Friday, October 11.
      • YOU WILL NEED A BOOK FOR THIS ASSESSMENT.
      • YOU WILL NEED ALL HANDOUTS, ARTICLES, AND NOTES.
      • ALL students are expected to take this exam (regardless of whether or not you have completed the summer assignment. It has been 1 month. You should have at least finished reading the book by now, especially with all the class time that has been given to everyone to work on essays.
    • HOMEWORK:
      • Keep working on essays.
      • Secure your copy of "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller by Monday, October 7.

Love ya, mean it. If you are going to be absent, you need to turn it in early.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR ESSAY ASSIGNMENT:

Due to the fact that I have given more class time than I planned and offered after-school assistance with this essay, there will not be any re-submissions for this essay. Check the rubric that is attached on the Google Classroom Assignment. Proofread your work. Have a peer review it. You've been given ample time in class to work. It is due by 11:59 pm, 12:01 is late. Late essay WILL BE HEAVILY PENALIZED.

ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1 AFTER SCHOOL (4:15-5:30), I WILL BE AVAILABLE TO OFFER  FEEDBACK ON YOUR ESSAYS PRIOR TO SUBMISSION. I WILL NOT GRADE/EDIT YOUR ESSAY IN FRONT OF YOU DURING THIS SESSION. I WILL OFFER FEEDBACK, SUGGESTIONS, AND REMINDERS. THIS IS ALSO A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO KNOCK OUT THE FINAL PIECES OF YOUR ESSAY WITH MINIMAL DISTRACTIONS.

Monday, October 7, we will begin our next unit of "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. The best version to get is the black cover. If you have the other 2, that's fine. No worries. You may enter a raffle this week to win a copy. You will enter the drawing by submitting Falcon Feathers. I will pull the winner on Thursday, October 3. I am not going to announce this in class. I want to see who actually reads my blog.  Additionally, here is an extra credit opportunity (up to 5 extra points on your ICB final exam). You must present this to me at the start of class on either Thursday, October 3 (A-day) or Friday, October 4 (B-day). Here is the challenge: you must hand write (legibly) the answers to the following questions about Truman Capote (each correct answer is an extra credit point: (1) What was his real name? (2) What is a roman à clef? (3) What was the first roman à clef that Capote wrote? (4) When is Capote's birthday? (5) Where was Capote born?

              Day 8 (9/17-9/18)

              AP

              • Finish group mini-essays
              • Start working on the outline. The information is in the Google Classroom. 4A Scholars, I have revised the original Google Assignment and it now provides you with an editable template for the outline. This is a better tool than the sample that was originally provided.
              • Google Classrooms have been split up. There is now a 4A class and a 4B class.
              • All AP forms need to be turned into Student Services by Friday.
              • Everyone needs to be in the online College Board AP course. There will be assignments given in this online course and regardless of whether or not you are taking the test in the Spring, you will need to be in this online class.
              • A-Day scholars: your outlines need to be complete by the end of class on 9/19
              • B-Day scholars: your outlines need to be complete by the end of class on 9/20
              • Photo Release Forms: please bring those back in. I would like to post more than just pictures of either an empty classroom, the backs and sides of people's heads, or selfies, although I do like a good selfie. Please get those signed in brought back into class so that I can have your lovely mugs on my teacher Instagram page!
*AP Study Hall Group Read: tomorrow, 9/19, I will be reading the Welty article and would be willing to read and annotate with a group after school from 4:00-4:30 in room 112 (Mr. A's room-I have study hall duty). This would be a great opportunity for you to get the reading out of the way. It is coming up for homework in the next day or so. This is not required. It is completely optional.

Today, we spent half of the class brainstorming for the poem that we are going to have to right. The poem is expected to be similar to the one that scholars were tasked to analyze in class (attached below). They then used a brainstorming guide to help come up with their own pieces for a poem of their own.

The remaining part of class was used to get everyone logged into a new program that we will be using throughout the remainder of the school year: StudySync. The first time was a little rough getting to the properly location but eventually, the class ended up in the right spot. Time was very limited, so when we return for our next class, we will be able to spend more time navigating through it.

B-Day scholars did not do a journal today as we had even less time to work due to the early release.

              (1) JOURNAL: 917: What is the worst or best piece of advice you have ever received?

              (2) Final Poem is due on 9/23 (A-Day); 9/24 (B-Day) IN CLASS.

              Day 7 (9/13-9/16)

              AP

              • Heavy work load today...but with friends. :)
              • So, today we worked on 2 major activities in preparation for our upcoming assessment on ICB, Ericsson and Didion (Welty to be added soon!). We worked in groups on a mini compare/contrast essay, comparing the works of Ericsson and Didion. This activity was not only to get everyone talking more about the texts, but also to start working in the Google Classroom on an actual document so that ALL could see what a well-formatted academic essay should look like. Those who already knew how to format the essay were able to ensure their groups met that criteria. Proper formatting is definitely something that everyone in this class will need to know how to do.
              • There was no homework assigned tonight.
              • When we meet again, we will being the Outline Assignment.
              • Google Classrooms were split up so that A-day scholars would have a separate room from the B-day scholars as there may come a time where we end up on different pages.
              • HW: None

              ENG I

Today, we discussed how to properly set-up and write journals in this class. Then we wrote our first journal which was a quote. Students were given specific instructions as to what their journal responses should look like. They then pasted or taped those instructions into their composition notebooks. If you do not have a journal, you will need to get one. If you cannot get one, please let me know. These journals will be collected and are test grades. Therefore, students will need to ensure that they stay on top of them and follow the expectations as outline for them.

We did a quick review of literary terms such as metaphor, simile, symbols/symbolism, and sensory words. After going on those terms, students were given a poem to analyze. This poem is an exact replica of what they will be expect to imitate in their own writing as we will be creating our own symbol poems. Students who did not complete the classwork assignment must complete it at home and return it to the homework box by 9 am on the next day of my class. When we meet again, students will start to brainstorm to collect ideas for their own poem.

              (1) JOURNAL: 913/916: “Achievement is the death of endeavor and the birth of disgust.” -Ambrose Bierce

              (2) Poetry Analysis (attached): read the poem, following the instructions on the poem. You are not only identifying the figurative language and literary devices, but you are explaining them as well on the paper.

              AP LANG

We are starting to get things rolling along in our AP class. Today, we started on discussion questions (handed out in class) and there was not enough time in class to finish so, scholars were instructed to take the questions and complete the rest of them at home. Scholars turned in their annotated article from the previous night's homework. Scholars also took their "In Cold Blood" books to assist with answering the discussion questions. Scholars are to bring those books back to class on Friday so that I can have them for grading summer assignments.

              First Day of School

Today was the first day of school and everything went smoothly. ENG I was assigned a reflection letter for homework and AP Lang was assigned their first article to read and annotate which is due the next time we meet. The link to the article is below.

The basic first day of school stuff happened. We went over policies and procedures, routines, and the syllabus. This is just the first day so I expect that there will be plenty of questions as we go along.
