ALL CLASSES...HEAR YE! HEAR YE!

I am definitely one who believes in making adjustments when something just isn't moving smoothly. According to a few of my scholars, my website "is too far away..." and Google Classroom is "much closer..."

None of that makes any sense, BUT, I am posting this to make you all aware that I will just be posting all homework and announcements in the Google Classroom. This (1) reduces the amount of places that I have to update and (2) keeps all the information in one location.

Day 21 AP: Act I of The Crucible

We started reading Act I of The Crucible. We did not complete the full Act and therefore, homework (which was already posted in the Google Classroom last week) was to finish reading Act I.

Start working on the handouts, but they were not homework.

Day 20: AP LANG 10/22-10/23 (Drama, Allegory, History, & Reading Homework)

Today, I handed out another insert for the IENs page 14 (Drama Terms Foldable 1- orange sheet). This is supposed to go in the IEN and you need to update it with notes by next week. The notes are attached here.

Next, we copied down the definition for allegory and watched a short allegorical clip from "Lion, Witch and Wardrobe." Then explained the allegory in the clip. This was page 15.

Then I covered basic historical information that led up to the inspiration behind The Crucible.  This information was recorded on page 16 of the IENs.

Finally, we began reading ACT I.  There were notes handed out that need to be addressed either as we read or after we read. It is whatever works best for you.

The homework for tonight:

1) READ: "Why I Wrote the Crucible" & take notes in your IEN (page 17) . (Be prepared to discuss during the next class) Article in the Google Classroom.

2) READ: "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" In your IENs (page 18) Sermon in the Google Classroom.
As you read, make note of:
1. all the images that come to mind (imagery)
2. all the feelings that this sermon evokes or attempts to evoke
3. the tone and how the imagery contributes to the tone
4. the parts of this sermon where you think those in his audience may have fainted and cried and why you picked those parts (yes, it has been stated that listeners in his original audience actually fainted and cried during parts of the sermon)
5. Edward's overall message to sinners and what he wishes to teach them

Be prepared to discuss during the next class.

As we enter the end of quarter one, a final extra credit opportunity awaits you.  You need to find out who Joseph Welch was and what his role was in ending the "Red Scare". You must type your answer in this form by 5PM on the 24th.

Day 18-19 (10/16-10/21) AP LANG: Crucible Intro, Grammar Check, IENs, Essay Resubmissions

1. On 10/16-10/17, that was the first official timed writing. This was not and will not be graded. Students will do a few more and get to choose which one they want me to grade.
2. There was also a pop quiz on the Fallacy Notes which were for homework the previous class.
3. On 10/18-10/21 there was a "Grammar Check" assignment. There was a "busy picture" posted on the board and students had to create a loaded sentence following this format: Article adjective noun, appositive, verb adverb prepositional phrase conjunction rest of sentence. (This activity does not need to be made up for those who were absent.)
4. There was a handout given out. It is titled "Modes of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos". Students need to cut it out and paste it into their Interactive English Notebooks (IENs) on the next page (the one after "The Thesis").  Students who were absent will need to go to their assigned folder located in the classroom on the materials table and get theirs.
5. Students will have the opportunity to resubmit their essays. The procedure to do so is below as well as posted in the Google Classroom.
6. There was a reading assigned two class periods ago: The Introduction of the Crucible. Those who didn't have the black book were supposed to read the pdf that was uploaded in Google Classroom. Based on that reading, there were 4 questions that students were tasked to answer in their IENs. Those questions are below. Students who were absent will need to make this up:

Introduction to The Crucible Questions:

1. Explain in detail what the driving force was behind Miller’s imagination?
2. Explain the parallel between Miller’s work and the state of the country at the time.
3. Explain how this work stems from personal accounts of Miller.
4. Explain why the bodies of those convicted were not given respectful/proper burials and what the reasoning was behind this act.

Resubmission Process for ICB Essay

I stated in class that there would be no resubmissions. However, on major assignments, I did state at the beginning of the year that resubmissions would be offered and you would have 1 week from the time the essays were returned. I must honor that and with that being said, all (A and B day) who wish to resubmit must do so by 9AM on Monday, October 28 following the rules below:

In order to resubmit, you MUST:
1. Submit your new/revised essay by 9:00 AM EST on Monday, October 28 in the Google Classroom under the "ICB ESSAY RESUBMISSIONS DUE BY 10/28 9AM" tab.

2. Print your original paper.
3. Print your new paper.
4. Provide a written/typed explanation as to what you changed/removed/added to your new paper.
5. Print the rubric (attached to the Google Classroom announcement and assignment tab).
6. Staple the entire packet.
7. Physically turn in this packet by 4:15 PM on Monday, October 28 in my classroom.

We briefly went over the exam. This gave scholars the opportunity to address any concerns or questions they may have had.

Scholars were given 25 minutes to try their hand at starting a timed writing.

1. Complete the Logical Fallacies notes in your notebook.

• We completed the intro lessons on Mon-Tues (10/7-10/8) in StudySync.
• Students were assigned StudySync textbooks that will be housed in the classroom.  If students have homework they will then take their books home with them.
• On Thursday and Friday, we focused more on the textual dependent questions for "Marigolds". Those students who did not finish, must complete the questions at home nand bring their work to class on Monday and Tuesday of this upcoming week.

Day 16 (10/10-10/11) AP LANG: Notebook Set Up, Intro to the AP Exam, Timed Writings, & Logical Fallacies

COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK SET-UP
Today we set-up the composition notebooks which will be used throughout the rest of the year to keep lessons, major notes, journals, and reading responses. The composition notebooks are ideal for this type of set up. I will collect these periodically and the Table of Contents needs to match and the content that has been delivered in class must be in the notebook and easy to located.

In the notebooks, we discussed the ins and outs of the AP exam, timed writing tips, and logical fallacies. The slides to the notes can be found here. 

You should really try to get a composition notebook as was stated on the syllabus if you do not have one.

SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT

Summer Reading Extension Students: your book, questions, outline, and essay are all due by 9 AM October 25. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED as this extension is 2 months from the original due date AND all of you have had quite a bit of in class time to work (some of you have chosen to talk instead, but nevertheless, the time was given). We are starting our first official unit in the next few days.  As mentioned in my weekly emails, I am asking for students to purchase their own copy of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee by the end of next week (Oct. 11). 

Students can bring me $8.00 by Friday, October 4, to purchase a book from me.  This way, you don’t have to worry about trying to order one in time. 

I have received some donated books already. Therefore, if you are unable to purchase a copy, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can secure one for your child. If you are able to purchase an extra copy, I welcome as many as you are able to donate. Students will be reading in class, but they will also be expected to read and annotate at home and I want to make sure all students can participate outside of class.

A few reminders...

For the final ICB Exam:
1. bring your book (YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BOOK...everyone!)
2. bring your articles (if you never printed them, you should...you will not be able to use the Chromebook or your phone, or anyone else's articles).
3. Bring whatever notes you have, especially the rhetorical triangle notes.

This is a paper exam and will probably take the entire class period.

For the essay due this evening:
1. Double-space your entire essay.
2. Works cited page goes on a page by itself.
3. Do a spell check.
4. Check your word count by highlighting the actual paragraphs and checking the word count that way. Your heading and title do not count.
5. Review the rubric.

Consider this: This is your first essay with me.  For many of you, this is your first essay that you have to actually use textual evidence, properly, and some of you are stressing out. Relax. You can only do your best and then, learn from mistakes, and grow from there. No one has "arrived" when it comes to anything. There is and will always be room for growth. DO NOT ALLOW THIS ESSAY TO CAUSE YOU ANY MORE STRESS THAN NECESSARY. IT WON'T DO ANYTHING BUT MAKE YOU SICK. When you have completed your essay, TURN IT IN, log off, and go do something that you enjoy. This is only day 13...we have a whole 70-ish more to go. YOU WILL BE FINE!
